It’s July. Let’s think about … Christmas!

Hello, friends. It’s 95 degrees here in Richmond today and the humidity is at Louisiana swamp levels. I feel like I’m going to grow gills or something. Well, one way to beat the unusual heat today is to think about something cooler, like Christmas! Right now is a good time to start planning a group excursion into Virginia for Christmas 2016 or 2017, and we’ve got some lovely packages designed to bring out the Christmas cheer in even the Scroogiest person.

Let’s have a look at Christmas in Virginia this year and find the very best destinations that promise a sleigh full of holiday merriment.

  • Richmond: Virginia’s Capital City is aglow during the Christmas season with brilliant decorations, traditional treats and some dazzling surprises. Monument Avenue and its environs are a National Historic Landmark District. The street is lined with inspiring mansions that date to the early 1900s – and do the folks that live in them ever put on the Ritz at Christmas! We’ll drive the stately avenue at night to see the decorations, grateful that the residents are kind enough to leave the drapes open so we can see inside. We’ll also take a lively tour of downtown with RVA Trolley and enjoy the Christmas decorations there. At the historic Wilton House mansion the staff will treat us to a gingerbread house-making demonstration. And I know you’re going to love our visit to Glass Spot Studio where you’ll help blow your own glass ornament to bring home with you.

  • Fredericksburg: What a historic place this is (George Washington grew up across the river) but Christmas time in Fredericksburg is anything but stodgy. The town is alive with Christmas spirit and we’ve chosen some things to do that will put a twinkle in your eye like Ol’ Saint Nick. We’ll take in a holiday performance and dinner at Riverside Performance Center (we really like this place!) that will set the mood. How about a nighttime trolley tour of downtown for a big dose of holiday lights and decorations? And speaking of spirits, we’ll tour the Smith Bowman Distillery, makers of very good bourbon whiskey (yes, there is some in our pantry) with the master distiller and learn the very complicated process to make the good stuff. We’ll also go to Chatham Manor, the only house visited by George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln (among others), and learn about the experience of Civil War soldiers who spent the winter of 1862-3 here.

  • Williamsburg: The Colonial Capital takes on a life all its own during the Christmas season. We’ll stroll the historic streets of Colonial Williamsburg and see traditional decorations of the Colonial era and perhaps enjoy a cup of wassail. Schedule one of our tours during the amazing annual Grand Illumination celebration for an experience your customers will never forget. Just down the road we’ll drive through two miles of festive holiday light displays at Newport News Park’s Celebration in Lights. At nearby Jamestown Settlement we’ll step back in time and experience A Colonial Christmas, a look at the Christmas traditions of the English settlers of the early 1600s and wintertime activities of the native Powhatan Indians. We love how Busch Gardens transforms itself into Christmastown during the holidays. The beautiful “Old Country” atmosphere of the park becomes adorned with holiday decorations and filled with music and fun. It’s the best of “something old and something new.” And for a taste of the Holidays how about a trip to the Williamsburg Winery for sips of some of Virginia’s best award-winning wines and plenty of seasonal cheer?
